One more thing…

As I was finishing up the final paragraph of my last blog post, I suddenly realized that I had forgotten to include Buckley and Buddy in my sketch. That just wasn’t right! How could I have been so thoughtless? They had waited patiently for me for over an hour as I drew and painted; they certainly deserved a spot on the page. So I managed to squeeze them in – can you find them?

There they are…still waiting!

Now the sketch feels complete.

It’s never too late to make modifications on a sketch, but I try to refrain from fussing too much when I near the end of the painting process. In this case, though, I’m glad I took a few minutes to add “the boys”. Doesn’t this page tell more of a story now than it did without them?

    • It was just any everyday walk, but sketching it seems to elevate the whole experience to something special, doesn’t it?

  • Your design layouts are always a huge huge motivation for me. This two page spread was so delightful with the spotlight. I’m headed out this week into our woods again. I know the trillium are up out there!

  • “Will someone new walk these paths next year?” And what new paths will you find to explore around your new home? This feels so bittersweet. Such a beautiful spread of the beautiful memories you’ve made at Summerhill. I can’t wait to see what you create in your new space!

    • I almost cried as I was writing this post. Most days I try not to think about leaving this place. But we’ve started going on walks around the new house already. It’s on top of a hill, so all the trails lead downhill, which is great until you have to head home! Granddaughter Isabelle (6) and I went exploring the other day and had a great time. She wanted to keep going and going. Too bad we both ended up with poison ivy from our excursion. We’ll be more careful next time. 🙂

      • I understand. What a gift, a little piece of paradise, you will be leaving to the new owners. But I have no doubt your new house will soon feel like a home too. I’m glad you and Isabelle are beginning to explore and getting to know the land. I hope you both recovery quickly from your bouts of poison ivy!

  • “Walking” along this process with you was so helpful in really understanding how the 5-5-5 sketch actually happens. Thank you for making everyday sketching seem so much more approachable. And yes, any walk on the property has to include your two best furry friends. Love this sketch-and especially the ‘boys’ and the creative carved title. Classic creative Leslie vibe!
