Sweet Baby Nursery

My new grandson, Nicholas, is one week old today, and he’s doing just great. He’s the cutest little snuggle bunny!

I thought you might like to see some pictures of his nursery. My daughter made the major decisions on the nursery decor, and I helped out with window treatments and some of the finishing touches. It’s a bright, sunny room, but the soft kiwi color on the walls makes it feel very serene. The room is a modest 10′ x 10′, but we packed a lot of cuteness into those 100 square feet.

Sara found a ready made bedding set that she liked, and we built the decor around it. The colors are blue and green with a touch of chocolate brown.

The patchwork baby quilt is embellished with embroidery and applique.

The transportation theme carries over onto the crib sheet. The bedding set includes bumper pads, too, but it’s recommended that they not be used with infants, so they’re put away for now.

The framed pictures on the wall are embroidered on fabric; the vehicles on the mobile are knitted soft sculptures.

Grandpa Fred refinished this glider rocker that I found at a thrift store …

… and I made soft, baby blue cotton chenille covers for the cushions. Great Grandma Saundra made the adorable flannel baby quilt, which features appliqued animals with three-dimensional feet and paws.

I like the simplicity of the window treatments – tab top box-pleated panels with piped banding. I used white cotton sateen for the body of the draperies and blue, green, and white polka dot fabric for the accents.

Green and white gingham buttons hold down the tabs, and 1/8″ welt of the same green check edges the banding on the leading edge of the panels.

The relaxed Roman shade is purely decorative, with no hazardous cords on the back side. I simply sewed on the rings at 6″ intervals and fastened them together to form the folds. A blackout roller shade behind the fabric shade provides light control.

If you’ll remember, I made what seemed like miles of fabric pennants for the baby shower that I hosted for Sara a few weeks ago. Clever girl that I am, I had plans for those pennants! We used them as a border on two of the walls in the nursery. They look so cute!

The transportation theme continues on the changing table pad, as well as the diaper stacker and laundry hamper. The changing table itself matches the crib.

A vintage armoire, painted white to match the other furniture, provides lots of extra storage.

The dresser area is still a work in progress, but will provide lots of room for the odds and ends that accumulate in a baby’s room.

The dresser was refurbished with new knobs and given a fresh coat of zero-VOC paint.

The shelf holds picture frames that are awaiting photos. Filling them shouldn’t be a problem since I can’t resist taking pictures of a certain little cutie-pie!

The flowers that bloomed in the egg cups on our mantel at the baby shower have been planted in the flower pot that held an arrangement on the dining room table. It’s fun to display pictures of mom and dad as babies and compare them with the new baby. Hmmm, does he look like mom or dad?

The baby clothesline that was used as a mantel decoration at the shower now adds a whimsical touch to the nursery.

The nursery is so sweet and cute, and it was done on a modest budget. It has a fresh, happy feel, with its party pennants and cheery polka dot fabrics. And, best of all, we now have a happy, healthy baby boy to enjoy it!

  • Lori, the paint is called "Maine Shore". I think we got it at Lowe's. It is a beautiful color, so nice and soft. And you can accent it with just about anything – blue, pink, purple, brown, etc. They all look great with it.

  • Kathy, I think you mean the rocker cushions, right? You need good quality 3"-4" foam for the base. I always cover the foam with a bonded Dacron wrap to add softness and plump up the cushion. You should be able to buy the supplies at your local JoAnn's. Or contact someone locally who does custom upholstery or slipcovers – they should be able to provide a finished cushion for you.

  • Love the colors in this nursery! Where did you get the fabric for the curtains?

  • I think it all came from JoAnn's, but that was a few years ago, so I'm not sure it is still available. You might try fabric.com, also.

  • Thank you for responding so quickly. We went to Joann's yesterday and couldn't find it. They must not carry it anymore. Thank you for your time! Your work is amazing!
