Just picture yourself whiling away an afternoon wandering through a quaint French village...

or sitting on a sunny hilltop, sketching the panoramic view spread out before you.

Imagine visiting a local French market and smelling the heady aroma of fresh-cut lavender...

or enjoying a café au lait at a sidewalk café with your friends.

We'll be doing all this and more during our week in beautiful Provence. I want this to be the trip of a lifetime for you, so I've chosen the folks at French Escapade to take care of everything for us, down to the smallest detail.

Jackie Grandchamps is the owner of French Escapade, and I met her last year in a happy series of coincidences when I was teaching in Tuscany. One thing that really impresses me about Jackie is her attention to detail. She will personally accompany our group every day as our guide, driver, and translator. Her years of experience and intimate knowledge of the area guarantee that each day will be organized, relaxing, and stress-free. All we have to do is enjoy ourselves! (Visit the testimonials page on Jackie's website to read what others have to say about their French Escapade experience.)

Our home base for the week will be Villa Glanum, a lovely country hotel surrounded by several acres of gorgeous gardens just outside of St. Remy de Provence (see video). You'll walk in the footsteps of Van Gogh, who created some of his most famous paintings during his stay at the asylum across the road (and actually drew Villa Glanum!) Adjacent to the hotel are the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Glanum which dates to the 2nd century B.C. Sketching opportunities abound - flowers, arbors, Roman columns, scenic views - all within a few steps of your comfortable room at the villa.

Although we may be tempted to linger at the hotel, there's so much more to see! We’ll venture out each day to explore charming nearby villages, and we'll be capturing these once-in-a-lifetime experiences on the pages of our travel journals.

My teaching will focus on illustrated watercolor journaling and how to create a colorful, varied, and personal record of your experiences on the trip (and in your everyday life back home!) You'll learn how to design dynamic pages with unique layouts, borders, and hand-lettering, and I’ll offer daily demonstrations of techniques for painting the subject matter you’ll encounter each day, everything from a lavender field to a village street scene. As I demonstrate, you’ll paint right along with me to gain the experience you'll need to paint confidently when we're on location.

Each student will receive a spiral-bound book containing all of the information we cover in the workshop. It’s filled with great ideas for designing beautiful journal pages.

And it includes a section of helpful step-by-step painting instructions showing you how to paint the textures, colors, and beauty of Provence.

The handout ensures that you can relax during the workshop, knowing that even if you can’t absorb everything during the week, you’ll have complete information that you can refer to later on. With my enthusiastic support, encouragement, and assistance, even if you're a beginning watercolorist, you'll surprise yourself with what you can do!

We're going to have an amazing time together as we immerse ourselves in all that Provence has to offer. Painting, touring, shopping, eating, relaxing --- we'll have time for it all with this perfectly organized small-group tour.

The food will be fresh, local and, oh, so delicious, with the flavors of Mediterranean cuisine predominating: garlic, olive oil, tomatoes, prosciutto, and fresh fruits and vegetables. We'll taste wine from different regions, including the rosé wines that are a regional specialty.

So, if you'd like to improve your painting skills, learn more about keeping a sketchbook journal, and have more fun than you can imagine exploring some of the prettiest places in the south of France, I hope you'll join me for this French Escapade workshop.

Let's discover the wonders of Provence together!
