2017 News...
  • February 2017 - I developed a brand new class for my return to San Clemente Art Supply in California this year. "Sketch It Now: Capturing the Moment in Your Sketchbook Journal" was a big hit - the students loved the new page layout ideas and border designs that I introduced.
  • January 2017 - Students from Florida and as far away as Colorado gathered at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, Florida, for a three-day step-by-step watercolor workshop featuring lessons on subjects ranging from beaches and rocks to crashing oceans waves. 

2016 News...
  • October 2016 - Tuscany is beginning to feel like a second home to me now, after spending almost three weeks there this fall. Back-to-back workshops kept me busy, but I had a wonderful time sharing all of my favorite places with twenty very happy women. Their enthusiasm made my job of teaching an absolute joy.
  • October 2016 - An autumn composite sketch was the subject of the last Summerhill Sketching workshop of the 2016 season. We all look forward to the special time we have together each month to paint, eat some great food, and share what we've been working on.
  • June 2016 - I returned to Owls Head, Maine, for my annual sketching workshop at Primrose Cottage. It's one of my favorite weeks out of the year, and I always love getting to know my students in this very special small-group setting.
  • May 2016 - Cheap Joe's Art Stuff in Boone, NC, is the best venue in the country for art workshops, and I was fortunate to be one of the lucky painting teachers chosen to be included on their roster for 2016. I had a full class of 25 students for my Sketchbook Journaling comes to Life workshop. It was an incredible week, and I can't wait to return in 2018!
  • March 2016 - My monthly "Sketching at Summerhill" events started up again and will continue through October, with painting lessons, great food, and a chance to share our work with like-minded friends.
  • March 2016 - My 4-week "Introduction to Watercolor" class, taught here at Summerhill Studio, helped a group of tentative beginners grow their skills with watercolor.
  • February 2016 - I returned to San Clemente Art Supply (in San Clemente, CA) to teach a 3-day "Step-by-Step Watercolor: Earth, Sea, and Sky" workshop to a group of 22 students. My step-by-step instructions helped them to gain confidence in painting a wide variety of subject matter.
  • January 2016 -  A workshop in sunny Sarasota, Florida, is just the ticket to beat the winter blues, and my 2-day "Sketch Your Life!" workshop at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens was a big hit. The enthusiasm of the students made my time there so much fun, and several of them have become regular sketchers since taking the class.

Past Events of Interest...
  • October 2015 - Fattoria Bacio - My week-long workshop in Tuscany was just like Mary Poppins - "Practically Perfect in Every Way!" A gorgeous location, interesting day trips, wonderful students and outstanding food made for an amazing week - one I can't wait to repeat in 2016! 
  • July 2015 -  Two sold-out sketchbook journaling workshops at San Clemente Art Supply kept me hopping during the last week of July. I had a great time getting to know some fantastic artists - their creativity was incredible, even though some of them were just beginners. I can't wait to return next year for another round of classes and a chance to spend more time in this gorgeous coastal community.
  • June 2015 - The "Waynesburg Prosperous and Beautiful" organization commissioned me to paint a portrait of downtown Waynesburg to be raffled off at the town's Summer Open House event. The original watercolor features a view of High Street from the top floor of a downtown office building.  Prints are available at Artbeat gallery in Waynesburg.
  • June 2015 -  My first residential workshop on the coast of Maine was a great success! Six women joined me for a week of painting the gorgeous scenery of the mid-coast region. We stayed in a beautiful cottage overlooking Crescent Beach near Rockland and had a wonderful time together.
  • May 2015 - The Pittsburgh Society of Artists welcomed me as a new member.
  • May 2015 - I was a featured artist at the David Bradford House's Spring Garden Party, where I demonstrated watercolor techniques and talked with guests about sketchbook journaling. 
  • Spring 2015 - Sketchbook Journaling and Advanced Watercolor classes kept me busy throughout the winter and spring both at WashArts in Washington, PA, and at my home studio.
  • January 2015 - The Upper St. Clair League for the arts invited me to speak at their kick-off meeting for 2015. I had a great time showing them my sketchbooks, and I seem to have inspired some of them to take up sketching!
  • January 2015 - I was once again a juror for the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards for the western PA region. The quality of the paintings and drawings that I judged was very high, especially considering the age level of the participants, who are all middle school and high school students. 
  • December 2014 -  Greene County Tourism commissioned me to paint a map of downtown Waynesburg, PA, my home town, to be used for various events throughout the year.
  • October 2014 - I was the featured speaker at the Bethel Art Association in Bethel Park, PA, where I shared my sketchbooks and talked about sketchbook journaling.
  • October 2014 - Mount Lebanon Plein Air event - I was invited to participate in the week-long event in Mt. Lebanon and Pittsburgh, PA, along with selected artists from all over the country. Several of my paintings were sold at the art show held at the end of the week.
  • Fall 2014 - I taught my 8-week "Sketchbook Journaling for Beginners" class at both WashArts in Washington, PA, and at my home studio.
  • July 2014 - Waynesburg, PA's First Friday celebration included a "Rock the Chalk" competition, and I was one of the judges. The originality of the entries was impressive!
  • June 2014 - The "Waynesburg Prosperous and Beautiful" organization commissioned me to paint a portrait of downtown Waynesburg for a summer raffle event. The framed original featured a panoramic view of High Street, painted in vivid, happy colors. (See detail views of the painting here.)
  • May 2014 - "Between the Covers: Artists and Their Sketchbooks" opened at Artbeat gallery in Waynesburg, PA. My sketchbooks, along with those of many of my students, and other Artbeat artists, were on display, giving viewers a glimpse into the private world of the featured artists.
  • May - September 2014 - "Sketching at Summerhill" is a monthly get-together at my home. It's open to anyone who likes to sketch. First, I share a short tutorial on some aspect of watercolor sketching, then there's time for independent sketching until "happy hour, when we enjoy wine and hors d'oeuvres while we share our sketches and get to know each other better.  
  •  May 2014 - I was invited by Stillman and Birn, manufacturers of my favorite sketchbooks, to be their featured artist at the 2014 NAMTA (International Art Materials Trade Association) show in Pittsburgh. My sketchbooks generated a lot of interest among attendees, and I enjoyed meeting art store owners from all over the country. (And I got a really cool Stillman and Birn shirt!)

May 2014 - "Between the Covers: Artists and Their Sketchbooks" was a month-long show of artists' sketchbooks and original artwork at Artbeat gallery in Waynesburg, PA. My illustrated watercolor journals were on display, along with those of many of my students. See pages from some of the sketchbooks here.
